AERRL joins UIC: Strengthening cooperation for European railway development

The European Association of Railway Rolling Stock Lessors (AERRL) is proud to announce its recent membership in the International Union of Railways (UIC). This significant milestone highlights the shared dedication of both organisations to promoting rail transport and fostering innovation throughout Europe.

Founded in 2021 to represent railway rolling stock lessors at the European level, AERRL has rapidly expanded its network, actively participating in numerous European working groups.

On 13 December 2024, the UIC General Assembly officially approved AERRL’s membership, recognising the organisation as an affiliate member and a key contributor to UIC’s mission of promoting sustainable and efficient railway systems worldwide.

Strengthening cooperation for the railway sector
By joining UIC, AERRL will become part of the UIC Europe Region, amplifying the group’s presence and impact within the European railway sector. This membership will particularly focus on:
1. Applying the Entity in Charge of Maintenance Regulation (ECM)
2. Promoting innovation to replace diesel traction
3. Facilitating electric energy metering and invoicing across Europe
4. Exchanging information on FRMCS

Being a member of UIC will, provide AERRL with unparalleled access to a vast network of expertise and technical documentation, particularly in terms of innovative and game-changing technologies.

By combining our expertise and experience, we aim to impact to drive industry innovation and promote a more efficient, reliable, safe and profitable railway system.” AERRL Chair Fabien Rochefort stated.

UIC Director General François Davenne noted that UIC was delighted to welcome AERRL into the UIC family, and that their participation would strengthen technical cooperation and support their shared vision of establishing railways as the backbone of an efficient and sustainable transport system.
