In order to effectively combat metal theft, especially the theft of signalling cables, in 2012 Deutsche Bahn will increasingly use artificial DNA to mark its railway infrastructure. In particular, this new technology is being used on the railway line leading to Berlin’s new airport, which is especially at risk. Deutsche Bahn has started the DNA marking at Schönefeld in Brandenburg.
“We are marking the cables and metal parts at critical points. This will enable DB’s property to be identified and make it virtually impossible for thieves trying to sell on stolen metal and cable”, stated Professor Gerd Neubeck, Head of Security at Deutsche Bahn.

In 2011 DB recorded 3000 cases of metal theft – 50% more than the previous year. The increase was particularly marked in the first half of the year. However since DB started the DNA marking in June, there has been a sharp decline.
