The congress was organised by the National Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention at the University of Oslo in collaboration with IASP, supported by the Norwegian Directorate of Health and sponsored by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The congress brought together 831 registered delegates from over 60 nations. 530 papers were presented in over 80 scientific sessions combined with numerous cultural, social and media events. One of the scientific sessions was “Railway suicide: Understanding and prevention” chaired by Professor Bryan Mishara from CRISE, Université du Québec à Montréal, Canada. RESTRAIL was presented during this session by Helena Rådbo from Trafikverket and Karoline Lukaschek from HMGU: the six presenters in this session all had commitments in the RESTRAIL project, either as an involved partner or as a member of the advisory group. The partners were from Trafikverket (Sweden), ProRail (Netherlands), Helmholtz Zentrum Munich (Germany) and Samaritans (United Kingdom). The session was well attended, with good discussions afterwards.
As a reminder, the RESTRAIL project – a European research project co-founded by the European Commission within the FP7 and coordinated by UIC security division – aims to reduce the occurrence of suicide and trespass on railway property and the costly service disruption these events cause, by providing the rail industry with an analysis and identification of cost-effective prevention and mitigation measures.
