During the Passenger Terminal Conference (held from 15 to 17 June in Paris), Nadine Pilon, from Modus partner Eurocontrol, gave a presentation on Modus project scenarios for future European multimodal air transport.

She explained that the overall performance of future European transport will depend on the alignment and optimisation of multimodal transport, to provide a seamless journey for air passengers while mitigating capacity constraints.

The four scenarios developed in the Modus project aim to explore how air traffic management (ATM) and air transport can contribute to improving passengers’ multimodal journeys (particularly air + rail combinations), and to better study the impact on transport performance. They focus on particular aspects that have the potential to significantly change the transport system:

1. Pre-pandemic recovery (baseline);
2. European short-haul shift;
3. Growth with strong technological support; and
4. Decentralised, remote and digital mobility.

This provided a good occasion to learn more about:

• The evolution of passenger demand for multimodal mobility;
• How air-rail complementarity can improve passenger experience; and
• Transport performance and sustainability

The Modus project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme on the topic SESAR-ER4-10-2019 ATM Role in Intermodal Transport under grant agreement No 891166. It started in June 2020 and will run until November 2022.
